”Ensin epäröin reunalla, kunnes hyppään ja lennän. Ilmavirrat vievät, muokkaavat maalausta ja minua. Liitelen kohti elämää, katson sitä suoraan, maalaan – valppaana, tanssien, hellästi ja vimmaisesti.”

Johanna Sipilän päivittäinen työskentely- ja ajatteluympäristö sijaitsee Pohjois-Espoon luonnonmetsässä. Maalausprosessin käynnistävinä voimina toimivat luonnon monipuolinen havainnointi, musiikki, kohtaamiset muiden kanssa sekä ympäröivän maailman kaoottisuus.

Abstraktit öljy- ja tussimaalaukset syntyvät läpinäkyvästi pohjustetuille pellava- ja puuvillakankaille. Maalaaminen on kerroksellista, teokset rakentuvat liikkeestä, rytmistä ja värien keskinäisestä jännitteestä.

Sipilä on valmistunut Kuvataideakatemiasta maisteriksi (2007) ja Aalto-yliopistosta kuvataidekasvatuksen maisteriksi (2023), ja opiskellut aiemmin kolme vuotta Vapaassa taidekoulussa. Hän on pitänyt näyttelyitä Suomessa ja ulkomailla noin kahden vuosikymmenen ajan. Ennen asettumistaan Nuuksioon hän työskenteli Harakan taiteilijatalossa Helsingissä sekä tallinnalaisessa taiteilijayhteisössä.


Näyttelyä on tukenut Taiteen edistämiskeskus.

“At first I linger at the edge—until I leap, and fly. Air currents carry me, shaping the painting as they shape me. I drift toward life, meeting it face to face, and I paint — alert, dancing, tender and fierce.”

Johanna Sipilä’s daily working and thinking environment is situated in a natural forest in Northern Espoo. Her painting process is driven by an attentive dialogue with nature, by music, by encounters with others, and by the restless, shifting chaos of the surrounding world.

Her abstract oil and ink paintings emerge on transparently primed linen and cotton. Her practice is layered and unfolding: each work grows from movement and rhythm, from the subtle tensions and resonances between colours.

Sipilä holds a Master of Fine Arts from the Academy of Fine Arts (2007) and a Master of Arts in Art Education from Aalto University (2023), and previously studied for three years at the Free Art School. For nearly two decades, she has exhibited her work in Finland and internationally. Before settling in Nuuksio, she worked at the Harakka Artist House in Helsinki and within an artist community in Tallinn.


Exhibition has been supported by the Arts Promotion Centre Finland.

FÜÜRER PRAISS WINNER 2021 - EXHIBITION AT METROPOL GALLERY, TALLINN, ESTONIA,

FÜÜRER PRAISS is an art prize awarded by the Metropol Gallery committee since year 2016. Aim of the award is to recognize nominated artists effort in combining different parts of the art scene and celebrate their creative work. The nominee is worthy of creating his/her own school of followers or already has it. Once a year, two artists are selected to make a joint exhibition in the gallery and collaborate in the name of "victory". The special prize is original works of art created especially for the nominees.
This year's prize will be played out as a festive test match between Setumaa and Finland.

The award exhibition will take place on two gallery spaces of the Metropol house - Metropol 6 m2 and Metropol Cabinet.
The opening event includes the Käpardid Puppet Theater performance “Artists -> Calendar 2022”, surprise musical appearances, a special FÜÜRER PRAISS 2021 winner-announcing performance and celebration of the 5th anniversary of award in free artistic spirit.
In German, f ü ü r e r means leader (führer), which is derived from the verb führen 'to lead'. 

The winners of FÜÜRER PRAISS so far have been Andrus Joonas and Vilen Künnapu (2016), Jüri Ojaver and Mari Kartau (2017), Peeter Allik and Mari Prekup (2018), Margus “Sorge” Tiitsmaa and Roi Vaara (2019). In 2020, due to COVID restrictions, the prize was not awarded.
